The National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), reports that after completing various interventions in infrastructure and connectivity, the Barva Volcano sector of the Braulio Carrillo National Park reopened to tourism.

This sector had been closed since April 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to correctly apply the protocols required by the Health authorities, the institution worked on a series of improvements.

Among others, the sanitary services, drinking water tanks, wastewater treatment tanks were repaired, and lavatories for handwashing at the entrance were installed. Also, a parking lot was set for visitors, and the trails were intervened to improve the visitor’s experience.

The Braulio Carrillo National Park is one of the largest protected areas in Costa Rica with 50,000 hectares. It is located in the Central Volcanic Mountain Range, northeast of the Central Valley. It has two sectors enabled for visitation: Quebrada González and Barva.

The Barva sector has various attractions such as hiking, since it has long-distance routes (challenge type), in addition to the sighting of flora and fauna, and the use of the site for meditation, among others.
