Between April 1 and July 24, the Amistad Bridge, on the main route to the southern area of Guanacaste and its surrounding beaches (including Nicoya, Samara, Nosara, and Tamarindo) will be closed for major maintenance works. 

Route 1 will remain open to all traffic, allowing driving to/from San José via Liberia. Heavy traffic is expected as it will be the only road for all type of transportation, possibly extending considerably road travel times.

National authorities will take several mitigation actions for road users, but to avoid any issues due to traffic conditions, Swiss Travel recommends the following options:

1. Consider taking local flights to/from San José and the affected area.

2. Include an extra night in San José in your itinerary.
