Located in the Coto Brus Canton, in Puntarenas, near the border with Panama, the new Bicentennial of the Republic Biological Reserve – Pajaro Campana, opened in August 2021.

With an area of 5,075 hectares, the reserve houses ecosystems and biodiversity of high scientific and conservation interest that will represent an attraction to promote research, both within the new protected area and in the surrounding land, which would allow generating experiences in management active and adaptive.

The site is surrounded by the La Amistad International Park (PILA) and the Las Tablas Protective Zone, and its forests protect the basins of numerous rivers and streams that supply drinking water to communities in the south of the country.

This place is home to three different kinds of forest, highly valuable for its ecosystems and biodiversity for scientific and conservation purposes.

There are important communities of tapirs, the largest mammals of Central America.

It is also home to different species of wild cats, such as ocelots and jaguars, and birds like quetzals and of course, bellbirds.

Bellbirds are more easily heard than seen, as they have one of the loudest bird calls in the world, that humans can hear as far as 0.5miles away.

Also, scientists have discovered that these birds have different songs depending on where they live, just like accents in us humans.
