The Central Bank of Costa Rica has been rolling out new banknotes of a more durable and resistant polymer material.

Beginning January 1st, 2022, the old cotton-paper bills of 20 000 and 50 000 Colones will be no longer accepted and taken out of circulation, the 20 thousand colones are being replaced with the new polymer bill.

According to our Central Bank, these are the security features you can check

You may check the new banknotes with this simple procedure:

Touch: The elements in relief in the character’s face and in the caption of the denomination.

See: Against the light the character’s face and the see-through register.

Turn around: The banknote and see how the map of Costa Rica changes from purple to green, and the figures in the security thread are floating (₡10.000, ₡20.000 and ₡50.000 denominations),or that the tread color changes (₡2.000 and ₡5.000 denominations)
