Costa Rica’s sustainable model received recognition for its work in reforestation since the 1990s and the protection of thousands of acres of its forests.

Our country was the winner of the Protect & Restore Nature category, in which each finalist was selected for tackling the challenge in repairing and preserving nature through reforestation and protection.

Costa Rica, through its Environmental Ministry, was selected for its forest protection programs, which pay citizens to protect forests, plant trees, and restore ecosystems, and its successful conservation model that has a great percentage of Costa Rica’s biodiversity protected under its Protected Wild Areas structure.

In the award ceremony, Costa Rica’s President Carlos Alvarado announced this award is going to be used to replicate this successful protection model in maritime areas, as Costa Rica land territory is 92% oceans, but only 2.7% is protected under marine protection areas initiatives.
