Disposable masks and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are generating an accelerated increase in plastic pollution.

United Nations data indicates:

  • 75% of disposable masks end up in landfills without proper treatment or floating in the sea
  • $ 40 billion is spent in the tourism and fishing industries as a result of pollution caused by PPEs.
  • The source of contamination of the disease increases due to the disposal of PPE masks without proper handling.

Birds, fish, turtles and marine mammals die from plastics, which now adds to death from swallowing PPE or being trapped between bungee cords. We can all help!

Use reusable or washable PPE whenever possible.

When disposing of PPE, cut the elastics first, and dispose the rest in a dedicated container for this waste.
