Costa Rica’s most iconic mammal, the two and three-toed sloth, has become the most recent national symbol.

Last week, Costa Rica congress passed the bill declaring the famous sloths the sixteenth national symbol of our country.

National symbols are conceived as cultural images representing our country and, when they are wildlife, these symbols help to impulse the creation of new nature reserves and the protection of existing ones. Among these symbols are our national flag, the Guaria Morada, our national bird called Yiguirro and the white tail deer.
