A great adventure began five decades ago; imagine a Costa Rica that was not recognized as the iconic ecotourism destination of today; it was hard for most of the world to locate the country on the global map.

Knowing that Costa Rica´s natural gifts were worth sharing with the world, Swiss Travel Costa Rica started its operations on August 13, 1972; during this 5-part series, we would like to commemorate our journey by showing you how it began and how it’s going.

THE DREAM 1972-1982

Traveling to Costa Rica was an adventure on its own; however, this never set back the dream of the company´s pioneers. While Costa Rica was primarily an agricultural country that produced coffee and bananas, Swiss Travel came to life with the solid idea to show the world Costa Rica’s beauty.

With basic tools such as typewriters and airmail, we contacted wholesalers worldwide to promise them a unique experience: A Jungle Train from the Caribbean coast to San Jose City.

This tour, along with other innovative ideas, caught the attention of many companies and adventure visitors worldwide, including the first-ever cruise ship arriving in Costa Rica.

The news spread fast, and the eyes of international travel stared at Costa Rica with great interest.
